Corporate Team Building: New Planter Boxes for The Resource Centre

Many thanks to the teams from London Stock Exchange Group & Deutsche Bank who joined us at the Resource Centre over two consecutive (& very hot days) in June for Corporate Team Building Days.

Despite the heat both teams worked with great enthusiasm and dedication helping us carry out some much needed maintenance work around the gardens and nature reserve, including:

  • Replacing two of our raised brick planter beds with new timber boxes. The brick planters were nearly 20 years old and their condition had started to deteriorate, meaning they were starting to become unsafe. Rather than replacing like for like we decided to replace them with taller and narrower timber boxes. The demolition of the existing beds involved moving around 4 – 5 tonnes of soil and laying around 5 square metres of paving around the new boxes!
  • Repainting our storage portacabin. The teams scraped back the existing paintwork, which had been flaking for a while, sanded and primed the bare metal before applying a new top coat.
  • General site clearance – the teams managed to fill a large skip with waste materials, broken equipment etc from the office and around the gardens and nature reserve.

It was amazing to see how much the teams were able to get done over the two days. Given the extent of the works we wouldn’t have been able to tackle such jobs in our project sessions.

Thanks also goes to Conor at Community Southwark who arranged for the teams from London Stock Exchange Group and Deutsche Bank to join us and take on the works. Community Southwark have supported Sydenham Garden over several years, arranging numerous corporate teams to work at either at our De Frene Market Garden site or at the Resource Centre as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programmes.
