Every Friday, Harvey arrives at the entrance to Sydenham Garden. He’s always on time. Harvey looks forward to coming here and tells his carer he doesn’t want to go anywhere else.
With a helping hand from one of our volunteers, Harvey is able to walk slowly up our tree-lined path to the oasis and sanctuary of his Sow & Grow session, where he takes part in activities and sings along with his friends. Being part of this group helped Harvey through an incredibly difficult time in his life, when his wife was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.
Harvey has been living with dementia for over two years. He is a poet and loves to read and sing. He is bright, intelligent and funny, incredibly musical and a joy to be around, but daily life can be a struggle. He is also becoming less able to walk by himself.
Thanks to generous funders, we were able to build a new, accessible path, and purchase a mobility buggy, so that Harvey and other co-workers (the name we give to our beneficiaries) can reach our community building safely. This was the first phase of our work – but now we need your help.
Harvey, along with many of our co-workers, arrive by community transport. When Harvey manages to get out of the bus, he feels very wobbly and needs to sit down immediately. We carry a chair up to the end of the path, to make sure he has a place to sit. But winter is setting in, and it will soon be dark at the end of our sessions. The rain is another worry.
Luckily we have a plan! We have permission to build a beautiful shelter at our entrance, for Harvey and others to sit comfortably in the dry, waiting for the buggy to take them up the path, or for their lifts home. And we are installing lamps along the path, to light our way in the dark.
Whatever gift you can send us, no matter how big or small, will go directly to helping us to build the best, warmest welcome for our amazing community.
Please, give us shelter. Help us make sure that Harvey and his friends aren’t left out in the rain.
