Sydenham Garden has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.
This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards. It is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. The nature reserve can be found at 28a Wynell Road, SE23 2LW.
Thomas Gallagher, Sydenham Garden Director said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the 5th year running.”
“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors. This award celebrates the dedication that our team, which includes people with mental ill-health and dementia, put into maintaining our sites to such a high standard.
One Green Flag judge commented: “An astonishingly well-managed site with a very inspiring approach in practice. They’ve turned an under-used nature reserve, transforming bulk of the land (as well as an additional ex-allotment site), into a community-run well-being garden. The focus is on providing activities, training and therapy for people suffering from mental health issues. The breadth of activities is remarkable for the size of the site, as well as the diversity of its features. A strong inclusive approach is very clear, and one which is well married with an entrepreneurial spirit in order to weather the stormy seas of revenue funding.
I was very impressed. Quite literally the most remarkable site I’ve judged in over 10 years.”
