Sydenham Garden’s Response to proposed Benefit Reforms

We Responded to the Government’s Benefits Reform Consultation

In response to the Government’s consultation on proposed changes to Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and Universal Credit, we asked our community what they thought.

What we heard was clear: people are worried.

Through comment boxes, phone calls, emails, and a group meeting, our co-workers shared their concerns about how these reforms would affect them, their families, and their carers. They told us that life on benefits is already incredibly difficult – the system is hard to navigate, the money isn’t enough to live on, and being disabled comes with extra costs that many people don’t see.

“We’ll be sicker, sadder, ill-er and poorer” – that’s how one community member described what these changes could mean.

We’re particularly concerned about:

  • People who already can’t access the support they’re entitled to because the system is too complex
  • Children taking on caring responsibilities
  • The growing pressure on charities and community services already stretched thin

Our position is clear: The Government needs to fix the current problems with the benefits system before making any more changes. This means making it easier to understand, helping people claim what they’re entitled to, and building trust.
